Tony’s Take: 10 Things Changing the Way We Think About Money

Jul 11, 2025
Connect

Thanks for being part of The Get Ready Movement—changing how we think about money, one idea at a time.

Every week, I spotlight what’s shaping the future of financial literacy—from emerging trends and practical tools to the people transforming how we talk about (and take action around) money.

1. One Thing to Share This Week: Weekly Action Prompt

📌 Action: Week 28: Review Your Homeowners and Renters Insurance

đź’ Tony’s Take: Don’t assume you’re fully protected—know exactly what’s covered, what’s excluded, and whether your coverage matches today’s reality.

Having the right coverage will make sure that you are fully protected in the event of a claim. Homeowners and renters insurance policies may not cover everything that you expect them to and will differ in how coverages may be defined.

2. Strategy of the week:

đź’ˇChoose replacement coverage, not an “actual cash value” policy. An “actual cash value” policy is cheaper but pays only what your property is worth at the time of loss—your cost minus depreciation for age and wear.

📉 Ensure your policy covers today’s rebuilding costs, and to replace your home’s contents.

đź’ Tony’s Take: Get the coverage you need: Earthquake and floods are not typically covered under homeowners and renters insurance policies. Coverage may be obtained by adding an endorsement or purchasing a standalone policy.

3. Big Question to Ask

❓Are there any changes on your policy renewal?

💭 Tony’s Take: Compare the policy renewal with your existing policy to catch any changes in coverage or price. If there are changes, call your insurer to find out why.

4. Find Your Passion in Refirement!

🔹 Retirement is outdated—refirement is about purpose
🔹 Rethink aging as a positive stage of life
🔹 Financial planning is for everyone—not just the wealthy
🔹 Align your values and money choices
💭 Tony’s Take: It’s time to rethink retirement—as the next chapter on our journey.

5. Navigating Retirement with Confidence and Clarity

Our early beliefs about money affect our entire financial life. Having the right conversations, even the uncomfortable ones, can lead to more confident and joyful retirements.

đź’ Tony’s Take: Our financial lives are intertwined with our life journey. Understanding how everything fits together helps you find success.

6. Financial Advice with Soul — A South African Perspective

Financial advice must stop being about pushing products and start being a lifelong partnership rooted in purpose, transparency, and empathy. Think "tour guide," not "trinket peddler."

💭 Tony’s Take: Just like you wouldn’t buy random car parts for your car, don’t piece together financial products without a clear plan. Start with your goals—then choose the right tools.

🎙️ LelanĂ© Bezuidenhout, Derek Notman and Adam Holt on the Rethink. Financial Advice Podcast. Check it out (here).

7.  What Drives Your Money Behaviors?

🔹 Create a positive story for how you want to live
🔹 Overcome the fear of scarcity
🔹 Every financial behavior makes perfect sense when you understand the underlying beliefs and feelings and thoughts.

🔹 Why money coaches and financial planners should collaborate.

đź’ Tony’s Take: Understanding why you do what you do with money will help you take control of your financial life.

8. Overcoming Debt and Money Shame

How family background and childhood shape your money mindset—and how to start changing those beliefs.

đź’ Tony’s Take: Our mindset has an outsized impact on our financial success.

9. Want to change the future? Start with a conversation with your kids about money.

Insights on teaching kids about money, why starting early matters, and how to keep the conversations simple—but powerful. And, the importance of doing work you love.

💭 Tony’s Take: Teaching kids about money isn’t just about dollars—it’s about values. The earlier we start, the more confident and capable they become.

10.  It’s Not the Budget. It’s the Follow-Through

You just need the right support system and a strategy that works with your wiring, not against it.

💭 Tony’s Take: Success comes from aligning your system with who you are. Follow-through happens when your plan actually fits your life.
